Visiting the Old Mill Inn

Today Matthew, my Mother, and I visited the Old Mill Inn (www.oldmilltoronto.com) and I must say, I'm highly impressed.

When we got there we had to figure out where the office was. Once we found it and sat down with Heather, the catering lady, we got down to buisness. We figured out a meal and worked on a price for 160 people:

Salad and Appetizers:

Market Fresh Greens

- with roma tomatoes and english cucumbers with lemon garlic dressing

Traditional Antipasto Presentation

- Italian cured meats, bocconcini cheese, marinated olives and grilled vegetables, sundried tomatoes and artichokes

Dinner Selection:

Partnered Grilled Chicken Breast and Mignonette of Beef Tenderloin

- White wine cream sauce and red wine, winter truffle, shallot reduction

Vegetable Selection

- medley of seasonal vegetables

- roasted potatoes with fresh herbs and cracked black pepper

Dessert

Sherbet

- orange, lemon, lime or raspberry

Sweet Table

- Tropical mango cheesecake, chocolate truffle cake, strawberry rhubarb tart, bourbon peacan torte, assorted mini french pastries and fruit tartlettes, sliced fruit tray

- coffee and a selection of teas

Beverages

Beverage Bar

- soft drinks, juices and sparkling water

It sounds good, doesn't it? Yum. And not to mention that the place is gorgeous too! I've attached a picture of the room that they offered us. Because of the amount of guests we have, this is the one best suited. The other picture is of the hallway outside of the room.

I really like this place and I know that Matthew does too. Even my mother thinks it's gorgeous. We still want to see Fantasy Farm and the Delta, but I really like this place. It would make for a very fancy wedding. My dad's reaction to this is "well if this is what you want"...my daddy is awesome. heh.

I also went dress shopping with Natalie this week. I am trying to locate pictures of the dresses before I talk about the event. But be sure that a report about that is coming soon! Here's a snippit...the last dress I tried on nearly had me in tears!

Location location location

Time to think about some locations.

These places are all so beautiful and I hope to visit them all. We have to book soon, so I will be contacting them asap. We've already seen Crystal Fountain and next is the Old Mill Inn. I'll be contacting the other ones soon...excellent.

lots to add

Alot of work has been done this week. Thanks to a day off work and a little motivation from my friend Dawn, I've got a small collection of photographs to share as well as places we've seen.

On Wednesday we went to see two Banquet Halls. Qssis and Crystal Fountain. Long story short, Qssis is NOT a good idea and Crystal Fountain would be if we had more guests. I have pictures of both places attached to this post, actually.

So the next step is to see the next place. On April 21st we get to go see the Old Mill Inn. I'm pretty excited to see it. I included a picture of that as well. If the price works out to being affordable, I'll jump all over it. We'll see how it goes, even if it's a bit of a distance to drive...I think it will be worth it.

Onto the flowers

Dawn, who is getting married in October, and I have been looking at flower arrangements online. I posted a picture of my idea of a centrepiece, but now I have gotten some ideas for my bouquet and the bridesmaids. I also found a really pretty picture for an arrangement that can be used for any purpose I can find it for. I mainly want to go for blue and white hydrangea and white roses. Even though I found a really pretty bouquet with hydrangea and daisies, I think the roses will be better. Matthew suggested more roses than hydrangea, which will probably make it more plausible for it to be a posey instead of a hand tied, but we'll see. I'll have to consult with a good florist later this year.

For now I get to iron out the colours I want for everything and find a place to have the reception. From there I need to make sure we have the church for that date and then get in contact with the chef for the standing reception.

I also added a few pictures of the hairstyle and cake style I want. Yes that is Padme from Star Wars...what can I say, she has awesome hair!

Must get the big things out of the way before I start on the little things. That's where Natalie, Tori, Ramona, Michelle & Brittany will come into play :) Yay for bridesmaids!

details, details

So because my friend Dawn has been planning her wedding so much latey, I've started to think more about the things that I want.

At the moment I have my heart set on Hydrangea flowers in blues and purples. I have an idea of the design of these flowers, but florists can wait. I want low centerpieces of hydrangea and open roses with some ivy hanging over a pedestal bowl, and a posey bouquet for myself of the same mix. Working at a florist for 3 years does that to a person. ha.
Oh, I have put in two pictures that I like. One is the bouquet (sans roses) and the other is a centerpiece flower idea. Just something for me to think about.

As for the dress. I have found a dreass that I really really like. I have two picutes in the album below. One is of the dress and the other is the detail in the bodice. It's a stunning dress and would really fit into my idea of having an elegant garden wedding. I'd love to have everyone dress up and look all fanciful for the wedding. I guess I'll have to reflect that in the invitations. Another thing I have to search for.

I can't really have anything set until we get a venue. I had a place called Qssis call me today and ask if I wanted some more information from them. It's a pretty indoor place, but I want to know what the building looks like on the outside. My mother keeps reminding me that in May there won't be a lot of flowers out. I know this, which is why I would like to have a pretty building to have pictures taken in. If we had a smaller guest list, I would go to the place where my eldest brother had his reception...but with 150 and growing, that's not going to happen.
Matthew and I will start going out to places once he get's his G2 next week. It's going to be tough getting it all worked out because of prices, but it will fall into place. It has to.

I should go and start collecting ideas now. Especially from my bride's maids. I'll be able to go dress shopping in a few weeks and if that dress ends up being "the one" i'm getting it now.

One thing down, 5 million more things to go. wow.

Slowing Down

I know, I know, it's been an awful long time since I've updated with any information, but I think I have something now.

Last week Matthew and I went and registered with The Bay. Yes, I know it's early to think about registering, but like I've said before, I have to get it done now or I won't get it done until last minute. So we sat with the consultation lady who then told us that we'd get a scanning gun. Matthew obviously liked that part. lol. So off we went. You can see the fruits of our labours here (http://www.hbc.com/registry/find.aspx?gs=GIFTREGISTRY&site=bay&langid=EN) just type in Hillier, Laura and you'll find our small list.
Funny story from that, though. Matthew and I had just put a coffee maker on the list when I said that we needed to get a tea kettle. It was decided that we wanted one of the electric ones that snap onto bases, so then we were left on design. I liked the traditional tea kettle shaped pot, where Matthew liked the jug style one. While I was picking up my choice, he scanned the jug kettle and quickly hit 'enter' so that it was the one we registered for! My jaw dropped open and I think I swatted him for doing that. He was happy in his victory because apparently I had been choosing everything. But, we got our main appliances out of the whole event and we're happy with that. By pure accident we ended up with Brushed Stainless Steel and Black trim kitchen appliances and navy blue/white worn dishes. There's also some wood in our knife block and cutting board and some white Corningware, but regardless, it'll work nicely.

I've also sent out some e-mails to several people. One was to our pastor about our wedding date, the need for the standing reception as well as asking for fees. He was on vacation when I sent it, so I hope to hear from him this week.
The second group I sent an e-mail to was www.sonraise.com. My mother found their advertisement so I shot off an e-mail to them. If they work out, the awesome Photography package would be $2129 and the DJ package would be $739. Matthew and I will have to meet with them in the near future.

We also need to head to two different reception sites soon. I got a phone call from one of the places I requested information from (www.pavilionroyale.com/). I really like this place and I think that Matthew's family will, too. I guess then it will just be how the costs pan out.

Finally, I have one little thing to think about that could turn into a BIG thing if not handled well. The Wedding Party. Matthew and I had decided on 4 for each of us. I had chosen a definate 3, with my 4th in mind, but now I'm confused on that. I want to ask Matthew's cousin Michelle to be in the wedding party, despite that it might make things difficult that she lives in Michigan. BUT since Matthew got back from his trip there, his cousin, whom I adore, has kept in better contact with us. I'd love to be able to ask her to be in the party too. It wouldn't be a problem to ask both Michelle and Britt to be in the wedding party because they could drive up together...it becomes the guys side where the problem is.
Matthew has his brother Steve as his best man, my brother and his two other brothers as groomsmen. That DOES leave my two older brothers positionless. I don't think that they would make a fuss if they're not in the wedding party, but I would definately want them to be speakers or readers or something to keep them well involved in the whole thing. However, if I add both Michelle and Britt to the bridesmaids, then there is an open spot on the groomsmen side. Could we go so far as to ask Matthew's cousin Philip (Michelle's brother) to kill the spot (he and matthew are close) or do I choose between one of my two brothers?
It's traumatizing, I tell you. I'll have to talk to Steve and Phil (my brothers) about how they feel. I don't want to exclude them or make them feel hurt. They're my brothers afterall...

Update

So it's been a while since I've updated this, and there is lots to say, so let me get down to it.
In late January I went to a wedding show with my mother. It was a great idea. I have tons of ideas to rifle through, and I think I'm getting closer to realizing what I want.
I sat down with my mother and Matthew's mother separately and went through all my stuff and the guest lists. We've got 145 on the list so far. My max will be 160 people. The hardest is not in inviting family, but friends. We both have a lot of mutual friends and aquaintences from church, which will end up being the hardest decisions to make. I've heard that 25% of your guest list won't be able to make it, so that makes it leaniant towards last-minute invites after the standing reception after the ceremony.
While searching for reception sites, however, I came across a place that was suggested to me and I fell in love with. The Old Mill Inn (http://www.oldmilltoronto.com). It's absolutely gorgeous and has everything I want. A place to have the pictures taken as well as several choices for the reception and customizable menus. Our second choice is Pavillion Royale (www.pavilionroyale.com). Matthew really likes the atrium ceiling, and I like the look of the whole room. We'll see how it irons out next month or so.
We've also decided on our Bridal Party. His best man will be his brother Steven and his groomsmen will be his brothers Tim and Chris and my brother Matt. My main of honor will be my good friend Natalie and my bride's maids will be my sisters-in-law Tori and Ramona as well as Matthew's cousin Michelle. That DOES leave out my two other brothers, but we'll have to come up with something else for them to do. I doubt that it will bother them anyway.
With that done, now it's time to crack down and get the design of this together. Natisha is going to do a consultation with me for make-up (yay) and I'm pretty determined to have hydrangea for my flowers and powder blue as my main colour, with pink and light purple accents. Those are the colours of hydrangea anyway.
I am so fortunate to have the help of my sisters-in-law and Natalie for the upcoming planning. I hope to get it all done with their help because as we all know, a wedding is the bride's day, and my day it will be. lol. Except that we're going to have to deal with all the attention. Some attention is fine, but all the attention is going to be very uncomfortable for me.
Next I must start seriously getting in touch with the minister to book him and the church and decide on the photographer. Then I can start looking at dresses for myself and the bride's maids. The men will pretty much be wearing 3 piece suits with a crevatte. It'll be hot.
So much to do, and it seems like so little time!

Guest List

I think that of all things that will have to be planned for this wedding, the guest list is going to be the hardest thing to do. That is why I've already started it. Thankfully with the help that I've gotten from www.theknot.com I've been able to keep myself organized properly.
So after entering the names of my aunts and uncles and their children/spouses on my fathers side and the aunts and uncles and children/spouses on Matthew's mothers side, we have a total of 100 guests. I've also added in some aunts and uncles from my mothers side and Matthews fathers side because most of my mother's family is in Newfoundland and scattered across Canada whereas Matthew's father's side is small and distant. I've also added in a few friends that I want to be able to come, but as I have come to realize, this isn't going to be any small guest list. All that added together is now at 121 people.
What Matthew and I have decided to do to aleviate having to invite everyone and their cousin is to have the ceremony at our church and then have a stand-up reception for those that attend the ceremony and have only family and close friends at the reception. We're looking at a guest-list around 200 people, which is scary, but we can do it. Now to find the venue and keep adding to the list...
